What kind of technology is Nintendo looking for? What kind of technologies are best suited for Nintendo Switch + Tech?

Nintendo is looking for technologies that could lead to new experiences on Nintendo Switch.

What kind of teams should apply?

Scrum Ventures invite technology teams of all types to apply to the program, including but not limited to: startups of all stages, corporations, and researchers from universities.

What does the application process look like? When are applications open, where do they find info online, and how much time will be required to apply?

Applications open on April 12th and information can be found on this website. It should take applicants anywhere between 1-2 hours to prepare their application and submit a video.

Are applications for this project limited to the United States? In addition to US companies, is the door open to non-US companies as well?

It is open not only to the United States, but to any country that our company can technically support.

How is IP handled in the program?

Participants are expected to keep confidential information in the application or during the program private. If sharing confidential information is necessary to demonstrate a technology on Nintendo Pitch Day, teams can discuss this on a case-by-case basis.

How are the teams selected?

Based on the application answers and product demo video provided in the application, the most promising teams will go through a series of interviews with the Scrum Ventures team until the final teams are selected for the program.

How many teams will be accepted into the program? How many teams will make the finals to present to Nintendo?

Scrum Ventures will select teams based on their technology and possibility to open up new experiences on the Nintendo Switch platform. There is no specific number of teams we will be selecting.

When will you announce the teams? When will teams be notified of acceptance?

Teams will receive notification of acceptance into the program in mid-June. Participating companies will not be announced publicly. Please note that acceptance to the program does not guarantee a business deal.

When and where is the program?

Nintendo Switch + Tech is a two month virtual program starting early summer 2018. An in-person Nintendo Pitch Day will be held fall 2018.

What are the benefits of the program for selected teams?

In addition to connecting with highly skilled and experienced mentors, participants will have the opportunity to talk to the developers of Nintendo and to do a technology demo and pitch directly.

What is the time commitment to participate?

Teams should expect about 2-3 hours of weekly programming in addition ad hoc mentor introductions and time spent preparing a tech demo and pitch.

If I have a big team (such as a late stage startup), who should participate in the program?

Participation in the program is on a team/company basis, but for specific meetings and activities it may make sense to limit participation to relevant members of the team.

What is expected for the teams during the program? What are the teams expected to show during the Nintendo Pitch Day?

Teams are expected to work on their tech demo and pitch to Nintendo with support from Scrum Ventures. The tech demo and pitch should showcase your technical ability, and creativity in opening up new experiences for the Nintendo Switch.

How are mentors involved?

Most mentors will participate by meeting with teams to help them, while others will participate by providing a talk or workshop.

Who are the mentors?

Mentors are comprised of founders, and investors.

Exactly how will the start-ups work with the Kyoto HQ? Do they need to travel there?

Teams will not be required to travel to Japan as part of the program. How teams and Nintendo work together beyond the program will be decided on a case by case basis.

When is Nintendo Pitch Day for participating companies?

Nintendo Pitch Day will be held in fall 2018.

Who will be at the Nintendo Pitch Day?

We will have decision-making development members from Nintendo HQ in Kyoto attending to view tech demos and pitches by the selected startups.

Does this program offer funding?

This program does not offer funding.

What does it cost to join the program?

There is no cost to the program.

How long will Scrum stay involved?

Scrum will coordinate the program and help teams during the program to develop a product and tech demo pitch to Nintendo. After the program, teams will continue to be supported by Scrum Ventures in a similar fashion to Scrum's portfolio companies.
